Betsey Johnson is a fashion designer who is best known for her feminine and whimsical designs. Her designs are considered "over the top" and embellished.
She was born August 10th, 1942 in Wethersfield,Connecticut. Her trademark pose at the end of her fashion shows is doing a cartwheel. Her love of costumes spurred from taking many dance classes as a child and as an adolescent. When she graduated from college she spent a summer as an intern at Mademoiselle Magazine and her fashion career started when she entered and won the Mademoiselle Guest Editor Contest.
In 1969, Johnson opened a boutique called Betsey Bunki Nini in the Upper East Side of New York. Then, in 1978, Johnson started her own fashion line. Her first collection was a success, but her second one bombed, and with the failure, it left leaving her with 3000 pieces of spring clothing and insufficient funds to stage a fashion show to attempt to sell them. That did not stop Johnson, instead her response was opening up a retail store in SoHo. Today, there are over forty-five of her stores worldwide.
In 2003, she expanded her line for 2004 to include handbags, hats, accessories, and scarves. Today she even has her own perfume. Johnson is a very talented and unique fashion designer with a lot of success, who is well-known throughout the world.
Her fashion shows are so unique and clever and her designs are girly, fun and can be worn for any occasion which is why I love her clothes, accessories and everything else she makes. Johnson is such a good fashion designer and she makes girl’s feel confident and pretty in her clothes.
